Wow!
Just back from opening night of Seussical the Musical — we loved it! (Of course, I love every QHS musical.) My impressions and ordering information below...
This is a completely new musical for the high school. Most of their productions are the classic musicals, but this one is only a few years old -- It's never been perfomed at QHS.
Just imagine if you took all the Dr. Seuss books you read as a child and put them in a bag and shook them all together. All the characters from all the different books come together and have adventures and we all get to enjoy it. I won't try to explain the plot any more than that... (I’m not sure anyone can really explain the plot… it’s Dr. Seuss, after all!) you will just have to see it for yourself.
The music is really good, and it's amazing how big the pit orchestra is, I don't know how they all fit down there.
Brooke Trantor (a Coonrod Senior, I might add) is fantastic as the Cat in the Hat, who serves as narrator, plays various characters, and at one point, conducts the orchestra. Horton the Elephant is played by Drew White, and Libby Ruth, as Gertrude McFuzz is his next door neighbor, who is trying to get him to notice her. Now, Gertrude is a bird (a rather plain, one-feather-tailed bird) and Horton is an elephant, albeit, one who sits in a tree, but one would not ordinarily expect to see romance bloom across species like this… but again, it’s Dr. Seuss.
Kristen Houston is a real vocal standout and has a lot of fun with her role as the Sour Kangaroo.
Shout outs to a couple of other recent Coonrod Seniors Drew Cuthbertson as the Grinch and my good friend Kevin Van Os, who plays Yertle the Turtle!
Congratulations to the whole company on a flawless opening night, and break a leg for the rest of the run!
