About this time last year, Tom came by the studio. He told me how much he and his wife enjoyed the family portrait we made for them years ago. But now, he said, time had passed, the kids had grown, and they wanted a new one.

Half-joking, I said to him, “I’ll give you a thousand dollars for the old portrait.”

He laughed and said, “No way!”

Now here’s something to think about… what is the value of that family portrait — once it’s made?
